Skunk Recipe

What should you do if your dog or cat has been sprayed by a skunk?

This is the only recipe I've found effective at eliminating skunk odor. Many other solutions have been tried and fail to work.

I recommend you use rubber gloves when applying this mixture.

Mix:

1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap

Immediately apply after mixing to the skunked pet. Work in to the exposed fur and skin, then rinse thoroughly with regular water.

Notes:

Mix may bleach colored fur.
If your pet has been sprayed in the eyes or mouth, rinse those areas with plain water. Do not use the mix in the eyes, ears, mouth or nose.
For very heavy exposure to skunk spray, repeat treatments may be necessary.
The mix needs to be used immediately and can not be stored. It will possibly explode if placed in a sealed container. The mix loses effectiveness rapidly.
If your pet gets wet (rain, bath water), the moisture may reactivate a small amount of skunk odor for up to several months. Re-treatment may be needed.
